Furniture Care

As the saying goes, prevention is better than cure, so we have tried to outline the most important furniture care guides below:

  • Do not use cleaning products containing ammonia, bleach or other harsh chemicals.
  • Always use coasters, placemats and trivets to protect surfaces from wet and hot items. This is particularly important for wooden and metallic surfaces. By keeping a set of (stylish) coasters nearby in those areas you are likely to enjoy a drink, will encourage people to use them.
  • Always protect items from direct sunlight / heat when not in use.
  • Do not leave newspapers or other printed material lying on (light coloured) surfaces.
  • Use felt pads for all furniture that sits on wood floors to avoid damage to the floor.

Wood Maintenance

Wood is one of the most popular materials in furniture making. It being a natural material, it will inevitably show some colour variations over time caused by sunlight. The below tips will also help take care of wood furniture and wood surfaces, so that you can ensure their longevity.

  • Avoid direct sunlight by protecting your furniture when not in use
  • Place wood furniture at least 30 cm from heaters.
  • Protect surface when using markers, crayons etc.
  • Avoid putting hot items directly on the wood.
  • Always use placemats or coasters under beverages to prevent marks and (water) stains.
  • Attend to spills immediately (this applies to pretty much any surface). Do not wipe or buff, instead blot the area.
  • Do not use abrasive cleaning materials, such as kitchen sponges.
  • Regularly dust with a soft dry cloth.
  • Untreated wood should also be wiped down with oil or wax at least once per year. Wipe in the direction of the wood grain.

Leather Maintenance:

A leather furniture is one of life’s great treats. There’s just something special about a genuine leather sofa that is impressive. The look, the feel — and yes, even the smell — place leather couches a notch above the rest. If you have a leather couch, it’s important to keep it clean and conditioned. Proper maintenance of your leather furniture will not only make them look amazing, it will protect and preserve them. Here is a step-by-step guide on how to clean and condition leather items:

  • Use dry soft cloth to wipe leather if necessary
  • Quality leather conditioner must be used at least every couple of months to protect leather and provide it with moisturising effect
  • Chesterfield buttons should be cleaned gently by using natural hair brush or slim hose vacuum
  • Apply leather protector to a microfiber cloth, and then work it into the leather gently and remove any excess leather protector. Wipe down the leather with a dry cloth to remove any extra leather protector, and then your leather will be cleaned and protected.
